Delphiniums are distinctive flowers with refreshing petal colors. They come in a variety of colors including blue, light blue, white, pink, and yellow.

Origin of the Delphinium Name

デルフィニウムの名前の由来について

The name Delphinium is derived from the Greek word "delphis," which means dolphin.
This is said to be because the shape of the delphinium bud closely resembles a dolphin. Indeed, they do look like dolphins.
The blue color also evokes the sea, making it a perfect flower for summer.

What is the history of Delphinium?

デルフィニウムの歴史は?

The history of delphiniums is ancient, with records from ancient Greece and Rome showing that their seeds were powdered and used as medicinal herbs and insecticides (such as for lice removal). In fact, delphiniums contain a toxic component called 'alkaloids', and their properties seem to have been known since ancient times.

Furthermore, in medieval Europe, there were legends that they 'kept scorpions away', and they were said to be involved in people's lives as flowers symbolizing 'faithful love'.

In the 19th century (Victorian era), breeding rapidly advanced, especially in England. 'English Delphinium', created by the passion of horticulturists, became the star of the gardening boom of the time, growing nearly two meters tall and bearing magnificent flower spikes.

In contemporary Japan, the 'Sinense' series, which are spray-type cut flowers, are very popular. They are popular flowers, beloved as gifts and as "something blue" for weddings.

What is the history of delphinium in Japan?

日本におけるデルフィニウムの歴史は?

What is the history of delphinium in Japan? Delphinium first arrived in Japan in the early Meiji era. Imported from England and France, it was known by its Japanese name, 'Hienso' (Flying Swallow Grass). At the time, it was mainly treated as a rare plant adorning the Western-style gardens of the wealthy.

However, delphinium does not tolerate Japan's hot and humid summers. Consequently, it was considered a very difficult plant to cultivate at the time. To enable it to bloom beautifully even in Japan's climate, production began in "cool regions" such as Hokkaido and Nagano Prefecture. By leveraging the cool climate, high-quality delphiniums could now be grown in Japan.

Afterwards, breeding advanced and it became widely distributed as a cut flower. In the Heisei era, it became frequently used with the popularity of "something blue" (wearing something blue at a wedding brings happiness). As a precious "blue flower," it is now an essential presence for celebrations and events.
