The reason for displaying flowers at New Year's is said to be "to welcome the Toshigami (New Year's deity) and guests."
Therefore, as long as you have a spirit of hospitality, you can basically display them anywhere. Here, we will explain the best "time" and "typical places" for display.
■ When is the best time to display them?
New Year's decorations can be started anytime after December 13th, "Shogatsu Koto Hajime" (the start of New Year's preparations). Generally, many households display them from around December 26th to 28th, after Christmas.
As a note of caution, displaying on the 29th is considered "nijūku" (double suffering), and displaying on the 31st is called "ichiya kazari" (one-night decoration), both of which are considered bad luck, so it's best to avoid these two days. Aim to finish decorating by the 30th at the latest.
■ Shimekazari (sacred straw rope decoration) & Matsukazari (pine decoration): "Entrance door" and "Kamidana (household Shinto altar)"
Shimekazari and matsukazari serve as markers indicating that "this is a sacred place suitable for welcoming the Toshigami (New Year's deity)." It is common to display them at a high position, such as on the entrance door, which serves as a boundary to the outside.
It is also good to display them on a kamidana (household Shinto altar) or in a tokonoma (alcove). Modern stylish designs can also be lovely as interior decorations on a living room wall.
