■ Kyoto's seasonal wildflowers
&The flowers from Kyoto sold at YOUKAEN are stylishly arranged using seasonal flowers. Here, we've compiled what flowers Kyoto's floral designers get inspiration from each season.
Spring
Shepherd's Purse

Shepherd's Purse, also known as "penpen-gusa," is one of the seven spring herbs.
In Kyoto, it grows abundantly in rich natural areas such as fields and mountains.
Its refreshing green color is charming, and when added to bouquets or arrangements, it creates an image of early spring, just after the snow has melted.
Its flower language is also lovely: "I offer everything to you."
Nigella

Its thin stems and delicate petals are like a garden in May, swaying in a refreshing breeze.
The usual color variations are white and blue. It is perfect for the freshest time of year, from spring to summer.

Summer
Clematis

Its cool flower colors, the movement of its stems, and its lush green leaves evoke summer.
This flower also grows entwined with other trees in the mountains and fields, blooming in summer.
When added as an accent to summer bouquets and flower arrangements, it gives a light and lovely touch.
Veronica

It is characterized by its flower spikes that grow upright, and its summer-like colors of white and blue.
Veronica is a relative of the Japanese plantain, a wildflower, and when combined with other wildflowers, it creates a truly summery, wild mountain atmosphere.
Recently, it has become a popular floral material in flower shops in Tokyo and seems to be embraced by young people as stylish.

Autumn
Celosia

It is often used in ikebana and, of course, grows wild in the mountains, fields, and cultivated lands of Kyoto.
It blooms red flowers, and its shape resembles a rooster's comb, hence it was named "Keitou" (chicken head).
It has no scent and is robust and long-lasting even in warm homes, maintaining the quality of bouquets and flower arrangements.
Multiflora Rose

As its name suggests, it is a member of the rose family, but it does not resemble the typical rose you might imagine, instead bearing simple, single-petaled flowers.
The berries of the multiflora rose are also a popular material used in ikebana, known for their excellent longevity.
Bouquets and arrangements featuring multiflora rose evoke the deepening autumn and sunsets.

Winter

Cotton
These are cotton flowers, but Kyoto's floral designers also treat them as wildflowers.
From November to December, as the temperature drops, wild cotton in the mountains simultaneously produces cotton bolls.
Although cotton bolls appear to be flowers at first glance, they are actually the fruit of the cotton plant. The actual flowers resemble hibiscus and are very showy.
