Hitohako no Kura
It is said that the origin of hanami (flower viewing) is linked to Tanokansaa (the god of rice paddies).* One theory regarding the etymology of "sakura" is that "sa" means the god of rice paddies (Tanokansaa), and "kura" comes from the word for "the place where a god resides and becomes still." Hence, we named it "Hitohako no Kura" (a box for the god to reside in).
*1 Tanokansaa is the name for the stone-carved god of rice paddies found in Kagoshima Prefecture and parts of western Miyazaki Prefecture.
Hitohako no Kura Concept
The mountain god descends to the village in spring and resides in the cherry trees.
When it's time to prepare for rice planting, the cherry blossoms bloom as a sign, and the villagers hold hanami under the cherry trees, praying with Tanokansaa (the god of rice paddies) for a good harvest and good health for the year.
Hitohako no Kura Materials
