Shobu (Sweet Flag)

The reading of "shobu" is a pun on words like "shobu" (match/contest) and "shobu" (valuing martial arts), so it was prized as a good luck charm in samurai society. Furthermore, its strong fragrance was believed to ward off evil spirits, and along with the wish for children to grow up strong, it has been passed down as an indispensable plant for Tango no Sekku to this day.
Hanashobu (Iris)
Although hanashobu (iris) has "shobu" in its name, it is a different plant from shobu (sweet flag). However, it was named hanashobu because its leaves resemble those of shobu. Hanashobu has a strong image as the flower of Children's Day and is widely loved.
