What is the origin of Respect for the Aged Day?

Respect for the Aged Day is the anniversary of being born in Japan.
Originated in the 1940s in Hyogo Prefecture. It is said that ``Toshiyori Day'' was proposed in Nomadani Village, Taka District, under the motto ``Let's cherish the elderly and create a village that values ancient wisdom.'' Masu.

Since September was the agricultural off-season and the weather was good, September 15th was designated as ``Toshiyori Day.'' It spread throughout Hyogo Prefecture in 1950, and in 1960 it spread throughout the country as "Old People's Day."
In 1968, it was designated as a national holiday and became Respect for the Aged Day.

Since then, an increasing number of people give various gifts to their grandparents on Respect for the Aged Day. Sweets are good, but more and more people are thinking about their health and giving flowers.

There are other theories about Respect for the Aged Day...

There are several other theories about the origin of Respect for the Aged Day.

The first theory is that it originates from the day Prince Shotoku built Hiden-in Temple.
A long time ago, in 593, Prince Shotoku built Hiden-in, a relief facility in Osaka to house vagrants who were struggling to make ends meet, elderly people in poverty, and people without relatives. Hiden is someone who should be pitied with compassion. Giving to the poor and sick means that you become a field that produces good fortune.
This is said to have functioned like an orphanage or nursing home today.
Since Hiden-in Temple was built on September 15th, there is a theory that this day was Respect for the Aged Day.

There is also a theory that this is the day when Emperor Gensho visited Yoro Falls. Miyuki is a word used to indicate that the Emperor is going out.
On September 15, 717, Emperor Gensho visited Yoro Falls. This spring water was praised as ``water of rejuvenation that nourishes the elderly,'' and the name was later changed to Yoro. This is said to be the origin of Respect for the Aged Day.

What is the difference between Respect for the Aged Day and Elderly Day?

In Japan, there is a commemorative day called ``Senior Day,'' which is very similar to the national holiday ``Respect for the Aged Day.'' What's the difference? There are many people who think so.

First of all, "Respect for the Aged Day" is the third Monday of September. On the other hand, "Old People's Day" is September 15th, and September 15th to September 21st is designated as "Older's Week."
``Respect for the Aged Day'' is based on the Act on National Holidays, while ``Elderly Day'' is based on the Elderly Welfare Act.
The purpose of the establishment of Respect for the Aged Day is also different: Respect for the Aged Day is to ``take care of the elderly who have contributed to society for many years and celebrate their longevity,'' while ``Elderly Day'' is to ``congratulate the people on welfare for the elderly.'' This day was established with the purpose of "deepening interest and understanding of the world."
Both days are meant to bring awareness to the elderly, but their purposes are very different. Generally, gifts are given to grandparents on Respect for the Aged Day.

What do you do on Respect for the Aged Day?

On Respect for the Aged Day, children and grandchildren gather together to celebrate longevity, such as 60th birthday and a happy birthday. At that time, we often have dinner together.
For such a place, it is more appropriate to send a bouquet than an arrangement.
Even if they don't get together as a family, there are many people who just give gifts to express their gratitude on Respect for the Aged Day. At that time, many people give flower arrangements that are easy to decorate.
In addition, events such as senior citizens' gatherings are sometimes held sponsored by municipalities.

Respect for the Aged Day in 2023 is September 18th!

Respect for the Aged Day is designated as the third Monday of September. Until 2002, the holiday was fixed on September 15th, but since 2003 it has been changed to the third Monday of September.
There is a one-week difference depending on the year, but it is one of the most cherished holidays in Japan, and many people send flowers every year. Please send a flower with a feeling of "thank you" that cannot be expressed normally.

As Respect for the Aged Day approaches, let's prepare well. If you are able to spend time with your grandparents on the day of the wedding, it is a good idea to bring flowers as a souvenir or arrange for the flowers to be delivered on the same day. Even if you live far away, please make arrangements for the flowers to be delivered to your grandpa or grandma's home by the day of the event.

&YOUKAEN's Respect for the Aged Day gifts are often booked and crowded, and there are a limited number of flowers, so we recommend purchasing them early.

At what age should you start giving gifts for Respect for the Aged Day?

The Elderly Welfare Act stipulates that people are 65 years old or older, and the World Health Organization also defines 65 years or older as an elderly person. It's a target. However, it would be a good idea to congratulate your grandparents on Respect for the Aged Day without worrying too much about it. Additionally, in recent years, some people have been giving gifts to their parents, so there has been a trend toward diversification in the way people think about Respect for the Aged Day.

A design that makes it easy to give as a gift to both young parents and grandparents who are used to seeing flowers.
