What is a Hydrangea Charm?

In Japan, it has long been said that "displaying hydrangeas on days with a '6' in them, such as June 6th, 16th, or 26th, wards off evil spirits."
With their refreshing appearance, Hydrangea Charms also make lovely small interior decorations.
Today, we asked store manager Usui about how to make these "Hydrangea Charms",
a special charm for this hydrangea season.
Why not relax with a cup of tea during your indoor time on a rainy day
and make this special charm unique to the rainy season?
What you'll need

・1 Hydrangea (or your favorite flower or greenery)
・2 sheets of hanshi (or washi) paper
・Mizuhiki string or your preferred string

How to make it
1. Remove the leaves from the hydrangea and trim the stem to an appropriate length.
2. On the first sheet of hanshi (washi) paper, write your date of birth, name, and wish. Fold it thinly with the written side inwards and tie it to the hydrangea stem.

3. Gently wrap the hydrangea with the second sheet of hanshi paper.

4. Tie and bundle the base with mizuhiki string or your preferred string.

5. Make a loop with the leftover mizuhiki string for hanging, and you're done!

6. Hang it in your favorite spot and enjoy.
Where to display your Hydrangea Charm

A very stylish decoration unique to the rainy season.
You can hang it wherever you like: under the eaves, in the kitchen, at the entrance, by the window...
It is said to be good to hang it in the toilet to ward off women's diseases.
Tips for choosing hydrangeas
Hydrangeas during the rainy season contain a lot of water, and often wilt within 1-2 days even when made into Hydrangea Charms.
Therefore, if you are making one from cut flowers, it is recommended to display them in a vase for a while and fully enjoy their fresh state before making the charm.
If you want to enjoy it for a longer period, consider choosing a type of hydrangea that dries naturally into a dried flower.
For making dried hydrangea flowers, autumn-colored hydrangeas with less moisture are suitable, but as the name suggests, they are difficult to obtain during the rainy season.
In this case, it's recommended to use pre-dried hydrangeas from the start.
If you prefer vibrant colors, using preserved flowers is also a good option.
Please choose according to your preference.
