"What are the traditional New Year's flowers?" Classic varieties and their auspicious meanings

All the flowers displayed for New Year's carry auspicious meanings, wishing for happiness and health in the new year. Japanese people have entrusted their hopes to these flowers, welcoming a bright New Year.
Here, we will explain 5 classic flower materials traditionally displayed to warmly welcome the Toshigami (New Year's deity), and their symbolic meanings.
Many of these flower materials become easier to find as New Year's approaches, so please learn their meanings and choose your flowers accordingly.
1. Pine (Matsu): Symbol of longevity

Many people would immediately think of "pine" when asked, "What are the traditional New Year's flowers?" You see it everywhere during New Year's, such as in kadomatsu (gate pine decorations).
Pine is an evergreen tree (a tree that keeps its green leaves all year round), and because it remains green even in cold winters, it has been a symbol of longevity and vitality. It is a very auspicious flower material.
Its flower meanings include "longevity" and "eternal youth." It is also said that its spiky needles ward off evil.
For New Year's, display pine to pray for the health and longevity of your family throughout the year.

When and where should you display New Year's flowers?
The reason for displaying flowers at New Year's is said to be "to welcome the Toshigami (New Year's deity) and guests."
Therefore, as long as you have a spirit of hospitality, you can basically display them anywhere. Here, we will explain the best "time" and "typical places" for display.
■ When is the best time to display them?
New Year's decorations can be started anytime after December 13th, "Shogatsu Koto Hajime" (the start of New Year's preparations). Generally, many households display them from around December 26th to 28th, after Christmas.
As a note of caution, displaying on the 29th is considered "nijūku" (double suffering), and displaying on the 31st is called "ichiya kazari" (one-night decoration), both of which are considered bad luck, so it's best to avoid these two days. Aim to finish decorating by the 30th at the latest.
■ Shimekazari (sacred straw rope decoration) & Matsukazari (pine decoration): "Entrance door" and "Kamidana (household Shinto altar)"

Shimekazari and matsukazari serve as markers indicating that "this is a sacred place suitable for welcoming the Toshigami (New Year's deity)." It is common to display them at a high position, such as on the entrance door, which serves as a boundary to the outside.
It is also good to display them on a kamidana (household Shinto altar) or in a tokonoma (alcove). Modern stylish designs can also be lovely as interior decorations on a living room wall.
■ Arrangements & Bouquets: "Living room," "Entrance," "Dining table," etc.

New Year's bouquets and flower arrangements should be displayed in areas where family and guests gather.
Recommended spots include the "entrance" (on top of the shoe cabinet), where the Toshigami (New Year's deity) is believed to enter, the "living room" for family gatherings, or the "dining table" where New Year's dishes are served.
By displaying beautiful flowers with a spirit of hospitality, you are sure to have a bright year.
(When displaying bouquets, please trim the stems slightly before placing them in a vase. When cutting pine, be careful not to get pine sap on your hands.)
