Shinogi Pitcher | Sekishu Shimada Kiln
This is an Iwami ware pitcher, designated as a traditional craft.
The beautiful balance between the substantial feel of the pottery and its gentle curves makes it suitable for displaying both Japanese and Western style flowers.
The Sekishu Shimada Kiln, established in 1935 in Gotsu City, Shimane Prefecture, is an Iwami ware pottery studio that still uses a noborigama (climbing kiln). The family has passed down its techniques through generations, with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th generations currently creating the pottery.
Shinogi refers to the decorative lines on the side of the pitcher. Each piece fired in a noborigama is unique, and due to the difficulty of mass production, the distribution is limited, hence the sale of a limited number of items.
What is Iwami Ware?
Iwami ware refers to ceramics fired in the Iwami region, primarily around Gotsu City, since the mid-18th century. The clay is dense, acid-resistant, and hard, allowing it to be fired at high temperatures. It is characterized by its robustness and high resistance to acid, salt, and water.
What is a Noborigama (Climbing Kiln)?
It is a firing method introduced to Japan at the end of the 16th century. It is a traditional Japanese type of kiln that utilizes a sloped terrain to connect multiple firing chambers. Since wood is used as fuel, the ash melted at high temperatures acts as a natural glaze, creating pottery with a profound character.
